Greening it up in College

1 02 2009

Many universities across the country,  including the University of Connecticut, have jumped on the green bandwagon.  The green efforts at these colleges have inspired individuals to take measures to be more green in their everyday life.

The following video gives some suggestions on how to do so:

Here are some other suggestions by EcoHusky, a student environmental group at UConn:

Water Conservation-

  1. Don’t keep the water running when brushing your teeth or washing your face.
  2. Bulk up on loads, hand wash, or wait longer to wash clothes.

Energy Conservation-

  1. Turn off the lights when nobody is in the room!
  2. Wash your clothes in cold water.
  3. Install CFL’s (Compact Florescent Lightbulbs) in your lamps. They use 1/4 the electricity of a normal bulb.
  4. Power down your computer when not in use.

It is important to do our part to save the environment  at a time when global warming is a major international concern.   The Onething campaign in Connecticut, which began last summer, is based on the theory that energy consumption across the state could be greatly reduced if every individual did just one thing.

So the next time you want to wash a pair of jeans you’ve just worn, reconsider.  Are those jeans really dirty? Or can they be worn again before being washed?
